How to Recycle

Recycling is something anyone can do. It's the most important step in going green, saving money, and feeling better about your environment.
Step 1: Find containers to place recycling goods in separated from the garbage.
Step 2: Know what can be recycled in your area.
  • Standard items that can be recycled in every major city include the following: Aluminum pop cans, each can be worth 5 cents. Plastic Pop Bottles, these can also be worth 5 cents. White paper, newspaper, and "snail" mail. Some places will also pay cash for paper.
  • Cardboard - some that cannont be recycled include the following: if it's got food in it, or is a freezer box with a wax like coating. You can recycle some cartons but they must be free of plastic. Any contaminants can ruin a batch of cardboard, so the easiest way is to stick to simple kinds of cardboard. including the following: Appliance boxes, non greasy pizza boxes, cereal boxes, shoe boxes, and the tubes of toilet paper - paper towels - and gift wrap.
  • How to recycle the cardboard: if you have curbside recycling that's easiest. Otherwise you'll have to take it to a recycling center. In both cases it must only be the cardboard (no plastics, tape or food particles), but staples are ok.
  • For Plastics look on the container for a triangle symbole. There will be a number inside. Some places only take certain numbers, but everywhere they take #'s 1, 2, and 5. With the exception of the following: you cannot recycle containers that held toxic substances such as oil, antifreeze, drain unclogging liquids, or cleaning chemicals with bleach or ammonia.
  • So here is a list of 10 items that are very easy to recycle, and all recycling centers take: Magazines, notebook paper, newspaper, plain white printing paper, milk/water jugs, pop/beer cans, pop bottles, cereal boxes, soup cans, and Phone Books.
Step 3: Find a recycling center near you at http://www.calrecycle.ca.gov/Publiced/Earths911.htm
  • type in your zip code (it will take you to a new page)
  • here type in the item you are recycling: so if it's paper simply type paper, or pop bottles type cans or pop bottles, etc.
  • Then press search and it will give you a list of places nearest you that recycle the item. Most places recycle several types of items so you'll only have to make one trip!
